The Great Mecidiye Mosque, which is known as Ortakoy Mosque (Ortaköy Camii) among the people, was built by the famous Armenian architects Garabet Amira Balyan and his son Nigoğos Balyan during the time of Sultan Abdulmecid.

In this part of the Bosphorus, the Balyan family, which has signed structures such as Dolmabahçe Mosque (Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan Mosque), Dolmabahçe Palace and Çırağan Palace, has contributed greatly to the urban aesthetics with this mosque they designed in neo baroque style.

Thanks to its wide and high windows, the mosque with two minarets, which can absorb all the colors of the light in the Bosphorus, carries impressive examples of stone carving art. In the mosque, the names of Allah, Hz. Muhammad and the first four caliphs were written by Sultan Abdülmecid himself.
