After Hagia Sophia became a mosque, Kariye, which was used as a museum, was reopened as a mosque with the decision of the President published in the Official Gazette.

According to the President’s decision in the current issue of the Official Gazette, the decision of the Council of Ministers of 1945 for the use of the Kariye Mosque as a museum and museum depot was annulled by the decision of the 19th Department of the Council of State, and the Kariye Mosque was transferred to the Directorate of Religious Affairs. It was decided to open.

Made In The 6th Century

Built in the 6th century as the Chora Church, the building was built in 1511 after the conquest of Istanbul. It was converted into a mosque by Atik Ali Pasha, one of the grand viziers of Bayezid, and started to be called ‘Atik Ali Pasha Mosque’ or ‘Kariye Mosque‘. The Kariye Mosque, which was converted into a museum with the decision of the Council of Ministers on August 2, 1945, will be opened to worship with the decision of the 19th Department of the Council of State in 2019.
